“Solar EnCORE House and living sustainably workshop”

Tour and planting a food production garden. Learn how to grow your own food and take part in phase one of this demonstration garden at the enCORE solar house. 

Workshop on growing your own food and tour of the EnCORE House. The enCORE house, a student-designed and -built solar house entered in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, has been rebuilt on campus for research, education and outreach purposes. The furnished, two-bedroom house includes functioning building systems and can accommodate meetings and class visits. 
Passive performance features of the house include:
Triple-glazed windows to minimize heat loss while maximizing solar gain
Super-insulated exterior envelope
Natural lighting throughout the house
Technological solutions include:
Flat-plate solar thermal collector in combination with a heat pump water heater
Solar thermal hot air system to maximize occupant comfort and minimize energy consumption. 
8-kW photovoltaic array for net-zero performance
Plant-based grey-water bioremediation system
Simple control interface that controls lighting, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
