Friends of Webster Park

About

Webster Park is a city park under the auspices of Columbus Recreation and Parks, and a designated Nature Preserve.  It is maintained as a natural area, intended as a bird sanctuary and wildflower preserve.   The Friends of Webster Park is an informal organization that welcomes everyone who wants to help protect and maintain this wonderful resource.
Much of the current effort of Friends of Webster Park is in removing invasive plants. Some are noxious weeds, and others are “escaped” landscape plants that smother and out-compete the native species. Among the most important Webster Park invasives are wintercreeper groundcover (euonymus fortunei), English ivy, Asian honeysuckle, and garlic mustard. Some invasives were planted intentionally in the past as flowering ornamentals, but have now spread so aggressively that they are threatening important native plants.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Friends of Webster Park have regular work days in the woods to remove invasives. The usual work day is the third Saturday of the month, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, generally from April to October. In addition, there are special work days arranged when other groups (e.g., churches, Scout troops, OSU students, etc.) want to schedule an event, and Friends are always welcome to join those.
